Declared in 2014, it is the youngest national park in Germany and the first in the state of Baden-Württemberg, protecting a portion of the legendary forest that for centuries fed the German popular imagination of fairy tales, several of them collected by the Brothers Grimm in the 19th century. It is managed on the same principle of minimal human intervention as other recent German national parks, letting the forest's natural succession run its course after centuries of intensive logging.
