Arctic wilderness and historic Sami settlements
Named after the Finnish president who governed the country for a quarter of a century (1956-1982) and who actively pushed for national parks to be created, this 2,550 km² area protects one of the last great stretches of untouched Arctic wilderness in Finland, in eastern Lapland, near the legendary mountain of Korvatunturi — Father Christmas's home in Finnish folklore. The land holds historic settlements of the Sami people and a reindeer-herding tradition going back centuries.
