Yorkshire Dales

Declared in 1954, it protects a limestone karst landscape with the greatest concentration of caves and underground systems in the whole of Britain, among them Gaping Gill, a vertical shaft over 100 metres deep and the largest known unbroken underground drop in the British Isles. Its dry-stone walls, built without mortar over centuries, mark out a traditional farmed landscape that has changed little since the Middle Ages.
