The first national park in Venezuela and, by some accounts, in the whole of South America, named after the Swiss naturalist who drove its creation
Declared in 1937, Henri Pittier is the oldest national park in Venezuela, named after the Swiss-Venezuelan naturalist Henri Pittier, who documented its biodiversity exhaustively in the early 20th century and personally drove its legal protection. With more than 580 bird species recorded in a relatively compact area, it holds one of the records for avian biodiversity density in the whole western hemisphere.
