It holds Pico Bolívar, the highest in Venezuela, and the highest and longest cable car in the world until it closed for maintenance
Declared in 1952, it protects Pico Bolívar (4,978 m), the highest in Venezuela, and was for decades reachable by the Mérida cable car, which was at one point the highest and longest in the world before it closed in 2008; it reopened, renewed, in 2016. The park held Venezuela's last tropical glaciers, lost to climate change: the last one, the Humboldt, ceased to be considered a glacier in 2024.
