Made a zapovednik (strict nature reserve) in 1988 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010, the Putorana Plateau is nicknamed "the Siberian Iceland" for its extraordinary concentration of waterfalls — over a hundred documented — and its plateaux of volcanic basalt. It is crossed each year by the largest wild reindeer migration in the world, with hundreds of thousands of animals moving across the plateau in one of the greatest land migrations of mammals documented on the planet, comparable in scale to that of the African wildebeest.
