Călimani

Călimani National Park was declared in 1990 in the eastern Romanian Carpathians, across the counties of Suceava, Mureș, Bistrița-Năsăud and Harghita, and protects some 241 km². Its core is the Călimani caldera, the largest volcanic structure in Romania, some ten kilometres across, the remains of a volcanic edifice active about ten million years ago within the Neogene volcanic chain that runs along the inside of the Carpathian arc.

The relief combines the crests of the caldera rim, which rise above 2,100 metres at the Pietrosul Călimanilor peak, with the interior depression and the outer slopes covered in forest. Above the tree line extends an extensive scrub of dwarf pine, and the massif preserves relict stands of Swiss stone pine, a conifer with a highly fragmented distribution in the Carpathians.

Its most singular formation are the so-called Twelve Apostles, a set of rock figures shaped by erosion on the volcanic andesites, which local tradition has named for their resemblance to human and animal silhouettes. The park carries a significant environmental legacy: the open-cast sulphur mining in the Negoiu Românesc sector, active between the 1970s and the 1990s, laid waste to a wide area of the caldera, and its restoration remains one of the area's great management challenges.
