Species group · Birds
WAnimals has 2 species of bird, spread across 2 families (Cisticolidae, Ptilonorhynchidae).
Ranges calculated from the profiles that record the figure, not from all 2.
Each one has its own full profile. This group does not replace them: it brings them together.
No species documented in this group is genuinely at risk according to the IUCN, with the data available today.
Recorded in 16 countries. The ones with the most species in the group:
It stitches leaves together with plant fibre, using its bill as a needle, to build its nest.
From
It really does sew: it pierces the edges of a large leaf with its bill and threads plant fibre or strands of cobweb through the holes, finishing each stitch with a knot or a thickening so that it will not pull free. The result is a closed pouch in which it builds the nest.
From
Rudyard Kipling immortalised it as Darzee, the tailorbird who accompanies Rikki-Tikki-Tavi in The Jungle Book.
From
It decorates its bower with blue objects for choice, bottle tops and scraps of plastic among them, and will steal ornaments from rival males' bowers.
From
The bower is not a nest: it is only a courtship stage. The female afterwards builds her own nest in a tree, incubates and raises the young alone, and the male takes no part at all.
From
The male arranges the decorative objects in a size gradient to produce an optical illusion of forced perspective from the exact spot where the female stands, and the males who achieve the most convincing illusion get more matings.
