St John's Reef

Depth: 5–40 mLevel: Advanced Open WaterMay-November
Spotted something wrong?

It is not one reef but an enormous system of reefs spread across the deep south, rising from an underwater plateau. That scale is exactly what gives the variety: one dive follows a vertical wall vanishing into the blue, the next threads through coral towers, caves and tunnels, and the third opens onto a hard coral garden over white sand. Habili Ali, Habili Gafair and St John's Caves are the landmark sites.

A remote reef complex with light caves and some of the best visibility in the southern Egyptian Red Sea.

Protection status

The St John's reefs form part of Elba National Park

Did you know?

The site known simply as Caves is a maze of tunnels where light pours in through large cracks in the reef; it is one of the few places in the Red Sea where the play of light, rather than the wildlife, is the main reason for the dive.
