Declared in 1991, Cabrera owes much of its exceptional state of preservation to having been a restricted military zone for much of the 20th century, which unintentionally kept mass tourism at bay in an archipelago surrounded by some of the most visited destinations in the Mediterranean. Its waters, declared a maritime-terrestrial national park, protect exceptionally well-preserved meadows of Posidonia oceanica.
