Declared in 1973, Bieszczady protects the south-eastern tip of Poland on the border with Ukraine and Slovakia, the remotest and least populated region of the country after the forced expulsions and resettlement of the local Ukrainian population (Operation Vistula) that followed the Second World War. The depopulation that followed allowed a marked recovery of wildlife, and it now holds the highest combined density of wolf, brown bear and Eurasian lynx anywhere in Poland.
