Highlight

Lowland and montane rainforest at the southern tip of Sumatra

Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park occupies the southern end of the Bukit Barisan range, the mountainous spine of Sumatra, between the provinces of Lampung and Bengkulu, and protects some 3,568 km². Its declaration dates from 1982, although the territory had been protected under other designations for decades before.

Together with the national parks of Gunung Leuser and Kerinci Seblat it forms the natural property Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2004. The three protect the complete gradient of Sumatran rainforest, from lowland forest to montane and subalpine, and hold a very high proportion of the island's biodiversity.

Bukit Barisan Selatan is one of the few places in the world where the Sumatran tiger, the Sumatran elephant and the Sumatran rhinoceros occur together, the three most threatened subspecies or species of their respective lineages; the rhinoceros population it holds is one of the last viable ones on the planet. In 2011 the Sumatran property was placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger because of illegal logging, poaching, agricultural encroachment — above all by coffee and oil palm plantations — and road projects that would fragment the parks. Bukit Barisan Selatan has been the most affected of the three by agricultural conversion.
