Cadí-Moixeró

Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park protects 41,060 hectares of high mountain in northern Catalonia, across the districts of Berguedà, Alt Urgell and Cerdanya, close to the Andorran border. It was declared by Decree 353/1983 of 15 July. The Cadí and Moixeró ranges form a continuous mountain barrier more than thirty kilometres long that acts as the link between the Pre-Pyrenees and the Pyrenees proper; its highest point is Vulturó, at 2,648 m.

The park's most recognisable image is Pedraforca, whose forked silhouette has become a symbol of Catalan mountaineering. Its profile is the result of differential erosion on hard limestone and soft marl over thousands of years. The great wall of the Cadí, with its kilometres of vertical cliffs seen from the Cerdanya, is the other major geomorphological feature of the whole.

Alpine and subalpine pastures occupy some 12,000 of the park's 41,000 hectares and are decisive for the wildlife that lives there, which is why their conservation is a management priority; among the threats are invasive plant species whose complete eradication is already considered unfeasible and which are controlled through pulling campaigns. Below the pastures extend woods of mountain pine and Scots pine, fir and beech, and at lower altitudes oak. The wildlife is that typical of the eastern Pyrenees, with bearded vulture, capercaillie, chamois and alpine marmot, as well as a notable diversity of cliff-nesting raptors associated with the crags.
