Declared in 1968, Copo protects one of the last significant blocks of primary Chaco forest surviving in the dry Chaco of Santiago del Estero, one of the most heavily deforested regions in South America in recent decades as the soya and cattle frontier has advanced, which has made this park a critical and increasingly isolated biological refuge within a deeply transformed regional landscape.
