Cockscomb Basin

Declared in 1986 after years of fieldwork by the American biologist Alan Rabinowitz, Cockscomb Basin was the first wildlife sanctuary in the world created specifically to protect the jaguar, setting an internationally cited precedent in big-cat conservation. It now holds one of the highest documented jaguar densities anywhere in Central America, thanks to decades of strict protection against poaching.
