Declared in 2002 by merging earlier parks, Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella is the only place in mainland Europe where musk ox survives in the wild, a species that had died out on the continent after the last ice age and was reintroduced here in the 1930s with animals brought from Greenland, in one of the first large wildlife reintroduction projects in modern European history.
