Europe's greatest canyon, with water of a turquoise so intense it looks artificial
Declared in 1997, the Verdon Regional Nature Park protects the greatest canyon in Europe, with walls reaching 700 metres deep, carved by the river Verdon through limestone over millions of years. The almost artificial turquoise of its water comes from fluorine and other minerals dissolved out of the surrounding calcareous bedrock, a phenomenon that has made the canyon one of the most popular destinations in France for climbing, paragliding and canyoning.
