Highlight

A key stronghold of the French Resistance in the Second World War, and the scene of a Nazi massacre in 1944

Declared in 1970, the Vercors massif was during the Second World War one of the principal strongholds of the French Resistance, thanks to its rugged, isolated terrain of limestone plateaux. In July 1944 German forces launched a massive offensive against the maquis dug in on the plateau, killing hundreds of fighters and civilians in what is remembered as one of the worst Nazi reprisals against the French Resistance, now commemorated at several memorials within the park itself.
