One of the last remnants of unploughed native prairie in North America; the setting of the exile of chief Sitting Bull after the battle of Little Bighorn
Declared in 1981, Grasslands protects one of the last significant remnants of never-ploughed native prairie in North America, an ecosystem that has disappeared from more than 70% of its historic extent under agricultural conversion. The region was the refuge of the Lakota chief Sitting Bull and several thousand of his followers between 1877 and 1881, after they fled to Canada to escape reprisals from the United States army following the battle of Little Bighorn in 1876.
