Declared in 1981, it is the largest national park in Thailand and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021 as part of the transboundary Kaeng Krachan forest complex, ecologically continuous with Myanmar. It protects one of the last significant populations of gaur, the largest wild cattle in the world, and of Indochinese tiger in western Thailand.
