Declared in 1959 on the Polish side (with its Czech counterpart Krkonoše), Karkonosze protects the highest range in the Sudetes, divided by a border that has separated Poland from Bohemia for centuries without ever culturally fragmenting the local communities on either side, who share traditional legends of Rübezahl, or Liczyrzepa, a mischievous mountain spirit present alike in Polish and Czech folklore.
