A natural biological corridor between South and Central America, at the end of the Darién Gap
Declared in 1974 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, Los Katíos occupies the Colombian end of the Darién Gap and acts as a natural biological corridor between South and Central America, a land bridge along which species have moved between the two subcontinents ever since the Isthmus of Panama closed some 3 million years ago. It was on the List of World Heritage in Danger between 2009 and 2015 through illegal logging and unregulated fishing in its rivers.
