Colombia
América del Sur
Colombia is the only South American country with a coast on two oceans and the point where the Andes split into three ranges separated by the Magdalena and Cauca valleys. That branching isolates valleys and slopes and multiplies the environments: páramo above cloud forest, Amazon rainforest to the southeast, flooded savannahs in the Orinoquía, dry forest in the Caribbean and, in the northwest, the Chocó, one of the rainiest regions on the planet. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta rises in isolation from the sea to almost five thousand eight hundred metres and works as an ecological island with species found nowhere else. That sum of barriers and microclimates makes it the country with the most bird and orchid species in the world.
The nature of Colombia
National animal: The Andean condor, the national bird, on the country's coat of arms
Did you know?
Some 1,900 bird species have been recorded in Colombia, almost one in five of all those on the planet, more than in any other country. The explanation lies in the geography: when the Andes split into three ranges, they left deep valleys that act as impassable barriers for forest birds, so populations a few dozen kilometres apart have spent millions of years evolving separately.

Conservation
Chiribiquete is the largest tropical rainforest national park in the world and a mixed World Heritage Site for its natural value and its thousands of rock paintings. The cotton-top tamarin, found only in the north of the country, is critically endangered through the loss of dry forest and the pet trade.
Where and when to watch wildlife
Bahía Málaga and Gorgona between July and October for humpback whales. The Sierra Nevada and the Chocó year-round for endemic birds. The Llanos in the dry season for savannah wildlife.

An isolated rock stack in the middle of the Pacific. Its coral reefs are small and not very diverse, but they are extremely well preserved: they survived the El Niño bleaching events of 1983-84 and 1997-98 that killed most of the coral in the Galápagos and Cocos.
