Mana Pools

Declared in 1963 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, Mana Pools is one of the few African parks where visitors have traditionally been allowed to walk without a compulsory armed guide, entirely at their own risk — an unusual policy that draws experienced walkers after a more direct kind of safari. Its elephants have taken up the unusual habit of rearing onto their hind legs to reach the highest leaves of the ana trees in the dry season.
