More than 300 glaciers, the greatest concentration anywhere in the United States outside Alaska
Declared in 1968, North Cascades holds more than 300 glaciers, the greatest concentration of permanent ice in the United States outside Alaska, in a massif so abrupt and so sharply peaked that it has been nicknamed the American Alps. It is one of the least visited national parks in the continental United States despite being relatively close to Seattle, for want of roads crossing its wildest core, and it is the setting of a federal programme to reintroduce the grizzly bear, gone from the area since the middle of the 20th century.
