Highlight

It holds Baines' Baobabs, painted by the explorer and artist Thomas Baines in 1862 and all but identical today

Declared in 1970, Nxai Pan holds Baines' Baobabs, a group of ancient trees painted by the British explorer and artist Thomas Baines in 1862 on an expedition through southern Africa. Remarkably, set the original painting beside a photograph taken today and the trees have barely changed shape in more than 160 years — a measure of the extraordinary longevity and slow growth of the African baobab.
