Protected since 1935 — one of the oldest national parks in Africa — Odzala-Kokoua holds one of the highest documented densities of western lowland gorilla on the planet, a subspecies distinct from the mountain gorilla, living in the lowland forest of the Congo basin. Unlike the mountain gorilla, far better studied in East Africa, research on the western lowland gorilla is more recent and logistically harder because of the density of the forest vegetation, which makes habituating and directly observing them enormously more difficult than on the high mountain meadows of Rwanda and Uganda.
