Declared in 1957, Golestan was Iran's first national park and is one of the oldest protected areas in the whole of western Asia. Its position on the transition between humid Caspian forest and dry Central Asian steppe produces an exceptional plant diversity, with over 1,300 species recorded, and it holds one of the last significant populations of Persian leopard, a subspecies listed as endangered.
