Pyrenees National Park

Declared in 1967, the French Pyrenees National Park has shared a border and joint scientific management with Spain's Ordesa y Monte Perdido since their combined World Heritage listing in 1997. It was central to the attempt to save the native Pyrenean brown bear, whose population fell to a single surviving male by around 2004, forcing a controversial programme to reintroduce genetically distinct Slovenian bears into the French Pyrenees, against strong resistance from part of the local farming community.
