Highlight

It holds Perućica, one of the last primary forests in Europe, and the highest peak in Bosnia

Declared in 1962, Sutjeska protects the forest of Perućica, one of the last two or three genuinely virgin primary forests surviving anywhere in Europe, with spruce and beech several centuries old that have never been felled. The park was also the setting in 1943 of the Battle of the Sutjeska, one of the bloodiest engagements between Tito's Yugoslav partisans and Axis forces during the Second World War, commemorated by a large-scale brutalist Soviet monument in the Tjentište valley.
