Declared in 1981, Tara commands the canyon of the Drina, the natural border between Serbia and Bosnia and one of the deepest in Europe. Its Banjska Stena viewpoint, above a bend in the river, has become one of the most shared images of modern Serbian tourism, and the little house stranded in midstream — built by a group of swimmers in the 1960s on a rock in the middle of the river — is now one of the most recognisable photographic symbols of the Balkans.
