Peneda-Geres

Portugal's only national park, declared in 1971 on the north-eastern border with Spain. Its relief preserves a Pleistocene glacial imprint exceptionally well kept for the latitude, with visible cirques and moraines. The park also protects archaeological remains such as dolmens and a Roman road (the Via Nova, which linked Braga with Astorga), along with the garrano, a native horse that has lived semi-wild in these hills since before the Romans, and the Iberian wolf, whose presence drove much of the original conservation effort.
