Declared in 1927, Prince Albert was through the 1930s the home of the naturalist and writer Archibald Belaney, better known by his adopted identity of Grey Owl, a Briton who passed himself off as a mixed-race Canadian indigenous man to lend greater authority to his successful campaign to conserve the American beaver, then on the edge of regional extinction from the fur trade; his true origins were not publicly discovered until after his death in 1938, causing a considerable scandal, though his conservation legacy remains recognised to this day.
