Declared in 1982, Pacaya-Samiria is the largest protected area in the Peruvian Amazon, nicknamed the forest of mirrors for its wide seasonal floodwaters, so still that they reflect the surrounding forest with near-perfect clarity for much of the year. Its management actively involves the local riverside communities, who take a direct part in controlling fishing and hunting within the reserve.
