Declared in 1971 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, Djoudj is reckoned the third largest bird sanctuary in the world, taking in as many as three million migratory birds each year on their route between Europe and West Africa, including large breeding colonies of great white pelican that can be watched at close range from traditional boats guided by local fishing communities.
