Highlight
Senegal's largest national park; on the List of World Heritage in Danger since 2007 for the decline of its large mammals
Founded in 1954, it is the largest national park in Senegal and has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1981, valued for holding one of the last significant populations of large savannah mammals in West Africa, a region where these species have disappeared from most of their historic range. Since 2007 it has been on the List of World Heritage in Danger, through the sustained weakening of its management and the severe documented decline of its large mammals to poaching, with a nearby dam and illegal gold mining cited as further threats complicating the recovery efforts now under way with international support.
