Declared in 1990 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994 as part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, Springbrook sits on the eroded remains of a shield volcano 23 million years old, one of the largest ever to have existed on the Australian continent, whose original caldera is estimated to have been over 50 km across before erosion wore it almost entirely away.
