Declared in 1955, Tadoba-Andhari is the oldest tiger reserve in the state of Maharashtra. Its name comes from Tadoba, a deity revered by the Gond tribal people as protector of the forest and the animals in it, whose small shrine — still visited by local pilgrims — stands within the park's own boundaries, an instance of traditional spiritual conservation predating any modern legal protection of the area.
