Declared in 1986 at the direct request of the communities of Pozuzo and Oxapampa, founded in the 19th century by Austrian and German immigrants who still keep Central European traditions, architecture and surnames deep in the Peruvian rainforest, an unusual case of a European settler community actively pressing for the protection of the natural surroundings around it.
