Designated in

Declared in 1886, shortly after Banff, its name comes from a Cree word expressing awe. Its greatest treasure is not visible to the naked eye: the Burgess Shale, found in 1909 by the palaeontologist Charles Doolittle Walcott, holds 508-million-year-old fossils of soft-bodied Cambrian organisms in extraordinary preservation, which transformed the scientific understanding of the explosion of animal life on Earth and include species with no recognisable kinship to any living animal.
Ecosystems found in Canada, where Yoho lies.
