Spotted something wrong?

An isolated rock stack in the middle of the Pacific. Its coral reefs are small and not very diverse, but they are extremely well preserved: they survived the El Niño bleaching events of 1983-84 and 1997-98 that killed most of the coral in the Galápagos and Cocos.

UNESCO designation

World Heritage Site (Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, inscribed in 2006)

Did you know?

It is home to the world's largest colony of masked boobies. Since 2005 it has formed part, together with Cocos, Coiba, Gorgona and the Galápagos, of a marine biological corridor promoted by UNESCO and Conservation International.
