A crescent-shaped volcanic crater, partly submerged, rising some 49 m above the water. It is what remains of one of the area's prehistoric volcanoes. Inside the sheltered bay there is a shallow, calm hard coral garden; outside, the back wall is a vertical drop dived as a drift.

The outer wall of the Molokini crater, exposed to the open ocean, with larger pelagic wildlife than the sheltered inside.
State of Hawaii marine and bird sanctuary
The contrast between inside and outside is so marked that it works as two separate sites: snorkellers stay inside the crater and experienced divers head for the back wall. It is worth arriving early, because it fills up with boats first thing in the morning.
