Kyrgyzstan
Asia
Kyrgyzstan is an almost entirely mountainous country: more than ninety per cent of its territory lies above one thousand metres and the Tian Shan runs through it with summits above seven thousand. Between the ranges open high valleys of summer pasture, the jailoo, where transhumant grazing with yurts still goes on. Lake Issyk-Kul, at one thousand six hundred metres of altitude, is one of the largest alpine lakes in the world and never freezes, because of its slight salinity and its depth. In the southwest, at Arslanbob, grow the largest natural walnut forests on the planet, a relict ecosystem that has been harvested for centuries. The high ground, with rock faces and glaciers, holds snow leopards, argali, Siberian ibex and Tian Shan bears.
The nature of Kyrgyzstan
National animal: The snow leopard, the national emblematic animal
Did you know?
Falconry with golden eagles is a living tradition in the Kyrgyz mountains: the berkutchi capture young eagles, train them for years to hunt foxes and hares over the snow and live alongside them as part of the family. The most singular part is the end of that relationship, since custom requires the bird to be released after a decade of work so that it can breed in the wild, in a farewell ceremony.

Conservation
Kyrgyzstan hosted in 2013 the international summit that launched the global snow leopard conservation programme, with the twelve countries of its range. Overgrazing of the high-altitude pastures is the main pressure on its ecosystems.
Where and when to watch wildlife
Sarychat-Ertash in winter for snow leopard and argali. The jailoos in summer for marmots and birds of prey. Arslanbob in autumn during the walnut harvest.
