Highlight

A farmed coastal cultural landscape rather than untouched wilderness

Declared in 1999, it is a singular case among European national parks: its principal value is not untouched nature but a farmed coastal landscape more than a thousand years old, with vineyard and olive terraces held up by dry-stone walls climbing near-vertical cliffs above five fishing villages (Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso). It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 as a cultural landscape, not as a natural one.
