Declared in 1971, Femundsmarka protects the country around Lake Femund, Norway's second largest lake, in one of the least populated regions of the whole country, beside the Swedish border. Its remoteness and the near-absence of tourist infrastructure make it one of the last occasional refuges of the Scandinavian brown bear in Norway, a species far commoner on the Swedish side.
