Gunung Leuser

Declared in 1980, it forms part of the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra (UNESCO, 2004) and is one of the last places on the planet where all four of Sumatra's great emblematic species still live together in the wild: the orangutan, the tiger, the rhinoceros and the elephant, every one of them critically endangered. The village of Bukit Lawang, on the park's edge, has since 1973 housed a rehabilitation centre for orangutans orphaned or rescued from the illegal pet trade, the first of its kind in Asia, whose work has returned hundreds of animals to the forest over the decades.
