Its summit, the Brocken, is the witches' mountain of German mythology, the setting of Walpurgis Night in Goethe's Faust
Declared in 1994, unifying earlier parks in West and East Germany after reunification, Harz is dominated by the Brocken, the highest mountain in northern Germany and the subject of centuries of legend about witches' sabbaths, a tradition Johann Wolfgang von Goethe immortalised in the Walpurgis Night scene of his Faust (1808), in which witches and spirits gather on the mountaintop on the night of 30 April.
