Declared in 1993 in honour of the fourth king of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, it is the largest protected area in the country and acts as the central ecological corridor linking practically the whole Bhutanese national park system together. The king it honours is remembered for having coined in the 1970s the concept of Gross National Happiness as an alternative to GDP for measuring the country's development, a philosophy that places environmental conservation at the centre of Bhutanese state policy.
