Highlight
The largest unbroken forest in Austria's limestone Prealps; its reintroduced lynx hunts in complete peace after decades of absence
Declared in 1997, Kalkalpen protects the largest unbroken forest in the Austrian limestone Prealps, with a notable programme to reintroduce the Eurasian lynx, hunted out of the region for more than a century. The park also preserves old logging works and the water-borne timber transport routes known as Trift, used until the middle of the 20th century and today turned into interpretive historic trails.
