Khao Yai

Declared in 1962, it was Thailand's first national park and remains one of the most visited in the country, being close to Bangkok. It forms part of the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 for preserving one of the largest continuous blocks of monsoon forest in mainland South-East Asia. It holds one of the most stable populations of wild Asian elephant in Thailand, along with several gibbon species, whose morning song is one of the most recognisable sounds of the park to anyone camping inside it.
